The structural crisis in the shipbuilding and fishing industries
forces Bremerhaven to reposition itself by means of sustainable
structural transformation. The seaside city desires to connect
up with two growing industries: the port economy is undergoing
strong expansion due to increasing globalisation, especially in
the Asian economies, and fish processing. The already existing
large cooling capacities of the fishing ports foster their devel-
opment into a centre for food processing. The city is also
promoting three other core areas of economic development:
maritime research and technology, wind energy, and maritime
city tourism. The Havenwelten project is an important com-
ponent of this endeavour.
